For many, powerlifting isn’t truly considered a sport, but an activity. It carries a stigma of being too intense for the average athlete, but New Trier and numerous schools across the Chicago area are looking to change that.

“Our meets are fully drug-free, no bench suits, ammonia,” New Trier coach Jim Davis said. “We’re trying to reframe the sport. Powerlifting has a stigma to it, where [it] sounds intense, generally speaking, and people are sometimes intimidated from joining.”
