The War on Poverty that President Lyndon Johnson declared in the mid-1960s has been characterized by a seemingly endless series of losing battles.

Poverty remains embedded in American society. Millions of Americans are unable to afford adequate food, clothing and shelter.

Nevertheless, there are many who haven’t given up the fight.
