North Shore Country Day School has recently hired an outside firm to investigate an allegation made by a former Raider about emotional and sexual abuse by a volunteer that occurred at the Winnetka school more than a decade ago.

T&M Protection Resources’ Sexual Misconduct Consulting and Investigations Division will investigate this report made on social media and any others that are provided in the coming months.

The allegation was reported by The Current in June, when a woman alleged the incident occurred while she was an Upper School student more than 10 years ago and levied the accusation against “someone who was volunteering at the school for a short period of time,” an email to the community from NSCDS Head of School Tom Flemma said on June 4.

It is not clear if the alleged abuse happened on school property, and The Current was unable to locate the aforementioned social media post.

In response to the former student’s accusation, NSCDS informed Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, and “engaged some of the nation’s leading authorities on these issues, David Wolowitz and Susan Schorr of the McLane Middleton law firm,” Flemma’s previous email said.

In a new letter to the school’s community on July 19, Flemma said school officials have “engaged several expert consultants to guide us and ensure our next steps are thoughtful, deliberate and sensitive.”

“T&M is already at work,” the email continues. “At an appropriate time, we will communicate again with our school community to share findings and outline next steps. These are not easy conversations, but our dedication to student safety is unwavering, and we are committed to whatever work is necessary towards this goal.”

T&M has extensive experience conducting investigations on sexual misconduct for independent schools, according to Flemma.

Anyone who wishes to report an allegation of educator sexual misconduct that occurred while a student was enrolled at NSCDS is encouraged to contact T&M’s Managing Director Rachel Hochhauser at (646) 445-7550‬ or rhochhauser@tmprotection.com

Any conversation with Hochhauser will be treated in a confidential manner, Flemma’s email says, except where circumstances require local authorities be contacted.
